The Maintenance section of the Site Manager/Site Builder dashboard contains specific options for typical site maintenance tasks in Berkeley Web Builder as well as the "flush caches" button, which allows you to clear your website's temporary data if necessary. See Figure 1, below, for an example of a Maintenance section of a Berkeley Web Builder site with the flush caches button and additional maintenance options.
About website cache
A website "cache" is the temporary storage of web-based content, such as pages, documents, and images. All live websites have caching enabled to reduce server lag and improve site performance.
By default, your website cache will refresh every 15 minutes. This means that after you save an update, an anonymous visitor (someone not signed in) may not see your changes for up to 15 minutes.
When to flush website caches
If you notice display issues or need public changes to appear immediately, navigate to the Maintenance page on your dashboard and select the Flush caches button (see Figure 1, above). However, because caching significantly improves page load times, we recommend using this feature only when necessary.
Site maintenance review
Depending on the content of your site and other factors (e.g., how long a site has been around, etc.), there may be additional items listed on the Maintenance page; see Figure 1, above, with the examples of "Page Not Found (404) report" and "Unpublished content" listed below the flush caches button.
These site maintenance review items are recommended areas of your site to monitor and update as needed in order to maintain the overall "health" of your site; see Table 1, below, for details about these review items and the recommended actions to take around them, as well as which user role can review and perform the listed items and actions.
| Review item | Recommended action | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Review alert banner | Review your alert banner if in use and turn off if no longer necessary. | Site Builder, Site Manager |
| Page Not Found (404) report | Review and correct any non-bot 404 ("page not found") errors in your site links. | Site Builder, Site Manager |
| Disabled menu items | This will appear if more than 3 menu items have been disabled in the Manage menus interface. Menu items should only be intentionally disabled (unchecked) from the menu, and should be periodically reviewed and updated (i.e., removed or re-enabled) as needed. | Site Builder, Site Manager |
| Unpublished content | Review unpublished content periodically and either delete or publish (if helpful in managing the overall collection of content on your site). | Editor, Site Builder, Site Manager |
| Images missing alt text | Review your images on the Files page and update any images without alt text. | Editor, Site Builder, Site Manager |
| Inactive users | Review any user accounts with non-admin roles who have either never logged in or last logged in over a year ago, and remove roles from those user accounts as needed. | Site Manager |
