There are four site menu options in Berkeley Web Builder:
- Main menu: The primary site navigation, located under the UC Berkeley wordmark and site name, and above the main content. It has two display options.
- Local menu (submenu): The sidebar menu used for navigating within a specific section.
- Secondary menu: An optional menu in the blue bar at the top of the site, next to the search box.
- Footer menu: An optional menu located in the footer region.
Main menu
Add your Basic and Custom pages to the main menu to structure your site’s primary navigation. Top-level "parent" menu items can have "children" sub-items assigned to them, which will display in either a simple dropdown or a mega menu format. For optimal usability, try to limit your main menu to no more than 7 parent pages.
See Figure 1, below, for an example of the main menu using the simple dropdown display on the Berkeley Web Builder site.
See the Main menu page for additional instructions on how to build and manage your site’s main menu.
Local menu (submenu)
When you add Basic pages as child items under a main menu parent, a local menu (also known as a submenu) will automatically appear in the left sidebar of the page. This sidebar menu shows where the current page sits in relation to other pages in the same section, as well as other parent items in the main menu. The same menu can be added to Custom pages using the Submenu widget.
See Figure 2 below for an example of a local menu on a Basic page.
See the Local menu (submenu) page for additional instructions.
Secondary and footer menus
The secondary menu displays one or more parent pages or external links in a dropdown menu, but does not display child pages. If you add only one item to the secondary menu, it will display as a single link. If you add multiple items, they will display as a dropdown menu with a customizable toggle label.
See Figures 3 and 4 below for examples of secondary menus on Berkeley Web Builder sites.
The footer menu displays one or more parent pages or external links and does not support child pages.
See Figure 5 below for an example of the footer menu on the Berkeley Web Builder site.
See the Secondary and Footer menus page for additional instructions on how to build and manage these menus.
Menu best practices
- Internal vs. external links in the main menu: Parent pages in the main menu should only be internal links to pages on your sites. Do not add external links as parent main menu items; add them as child pages only.
- Menu link titles: Use unique labels when naming your menu items (see the individual pages about for more instructions), i.e., do not have two menu items called "About Us."
