About the People feature

The People feature in Berkeley Web Builder allows you to create content for individual people, which can then be featured using dedicated People widgets on Custom pages. A "Person" content item includes fields for a name, role, job title, bio/CV, research interests, a photo, and contact information. Many of these field labels are configurable to suit your site's specific needs.

This feature is an effective way to create and showcase a directory of people on your site. The dedicated People widgets allow you to display this content with or without search and filtering options. See Figure 1, below, for an example of a Custom page featuring People content. Creating Person content items

To create or edit Person content items, navigate to the Manage Content page on the dashboard and filter by "Person" to update the starter content or go to the Add Content page and select the Add Person button.

Note: If you do not see Person/People options on your dashboard, the feature may not be enabled. Check your Features page or contact your Site Manager to request access.

People fields

Person content items utilize the full WYSIWYG editing toolbar and include the following fields:

  • Display name: Enter the person’s name as you want it to be displayed. (See the "Integration with other features" section for details on how this name creates relationships between features).
  • Sortable name: Enter the name in the format used for alphabetical sorting (e.g., "Lastname, Firstname"). If the sort order should match the display name, enter the same value in both fields.
  • Job title (optional): A job or academic title.
  • Bio/CV: Enter the person’s biography/curriculum information. This field is equivalent to the "Body" field on other content types.
  • Full CV (optional): Attach a full CV file.
  • Research interests (optional): Add any research interests here, separated by commas.
  • People categories (optional): A category for grouping Person content and enabling filters.
  • Email/Telephone/Address/External link (optional): Fields for Email, Telephone, Address, and External links.
  • Department (optional): Assign one or more departments to each Person. You can enter a department name manually or use the autocomplete search.

People images

The Person content type includes the Featured Image field. This image displays on the individual Person page and is also used in dedicated People listing widgets (as well as generic content listings widgets).

If you do not upload a Featured Image to accompany the Person, a default image of the Campanile will display instead. You can customize this default image if desired in the People feature settings. People photos can be cropped and displayed in square, portrait, and landscape image styles.

Image styles

The built-in image styles require a minimum image size of 675x450 pixels and use the following aspect ratios:

  • Square: 1:1
  • Portrait: 3:4
  • Landscape: 1.5:1

To ensure a consistent look and feel across your directory, use these minimum sizes and aspect ratios as a guide. You may need to crop or adjust photos using an external tool (such as Photoshop) before uploading if the original versions vary in size or resolution.

People feature settings

The field labels for Person content items can be customized in the People Feature Settings section of the dashboard. For example, you could change “Bio/CV” to “About.”

To access and change these settings, navigate to the Settings page on the dashboard and select the "People feature" link (see Figure 5, below) or find the "People feature" link on the Features page. The settings page allows you to change the default placeholder photo and the labels for Department, People Categories, Job Title, Bio/CV, and Research Interests. See Figure 6, below.

People widgets

Once your Person content items are published, use People widgets to display them on Custom pages or within other features like Departments and News.

To use the dedicated People widgets, go to the Customize tab of your Custom page, click Add widget, and select People (located in the "Features Content" section). Browse the available listings widgets, select a widget to view a preview, and click the "Add" button to use. See Figure 7, below.

People categories

People content items can be grouped by People categories, which are then used to filter People widgets and Portfolios.

Manage these categories on the Categories page of the dashboard. Select the People categories link to add, edit, remove, or re-order terms (e.g., "Faculty," "Researcher," "Staff"). See Figures 8 and 9, below.

Integrations with other features

People content can be directly associated with Departments, News articles, and Publications items. People content can also be featured on and used as a filter for Portfolio pages.

Note: Connections between features require exact spelling of the Display Name when adding a Person to other fields (e.g., assigning a Person as the Author of a News article).

Departments

Departments are organizational units such as research centers, academic departments, administrative units, or schools.

The Departments feature is designed to work with the People feature, automatically creating connections between Person content items and multiple departments. It comes with its own content type and dedicated widgets and Departments content can be used with and without People content.

Department fields and categories

  • Title: Enter the name of the department.
  • Body: Enter a description of the department.
  • Department categories (optional): A category for grouping Department content.
  • Email/Telephone/Address/External link (optional): Fields for Email, Telephone, Address, and External links.

Department categories are managed similarly to People categories via the Categories page on the dashboard (see Figure 6, above, and select “Department categories”).

Department widgets

There are dedicated Department widgets available from the Features Content section of the widget selection screen when adding widgets to a Custom page. These are the same types of widgets (Cards, Thumbnail List, etc.) available for other features to display listing(s) of Departments content. See Figure 7, above, and select “Departments” from the “Features Content” section of the widget selection screen.

News and Publications

  • News: "Author" and "Subject" fields are available to associate articles with People content items.
  • Publications: The "Author" field allows you to display an Author link on Publication items and automatically generates a list of publications on that specific Person's page.

Contextual content widgets

If you have associated People content with News or Publications, a "Contextual Content" section will appear in the widget selection screen when customizing a Person's page. These widgets automatically display the specific connections (e.g., a list of Publications authored by that person).

See Figure 10 for an example of the widget selection screen with a "Contextual Content" section, and see Figure 11 for an example of a Person content item with two contextual content widgets (to show that the Person is the Author of a News article and a Publications item with links to both to demonstrate the connection).
