How to use additional features in Berkeley Web Builder

Related information: content types page

As covered on the Content types page, you will build your Berkeley Web Builder site by utilizing the generic Basic page and Custom page types for the foundational architecture, and then you will use some of these additional features for data-specific structures and content integrations and display options.

These additional features often include unique content types, categories, and/or fields, while other features have additional content display and site enhancement options. (More instructions on how to use these individual features will be available soon.)

  • FAQ: organize frequently asked questions into categorized lists
  • News: feature time-sensitive information
  • People: manage staff directories, faculty profiles, or team bios
  • Publications: catalog research papers, articles, or white papers
  • Portfolio: display a dynamically-filtered grid of content
  • Analytics: use Google Analytics (live sites only)
  • SEO: enhancements for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) (live sites only)

The FAQ, News, People, and Publications features have the following advantages when used mindfully in tandem with the generic content types and foundational architecture of your site:

  • semantic grouping of content, where content items within the same feature can be easily grouped together in listings widgets
  • structured content with specific fields (e.g., date, source, job title, sortable name, etc.) that are not available on Basic and Custom pages; listings widgets can feature and be filtered by specific feature fields
  • automatic integration between features, where content types can be linked between features (e.g., a Person content item can be automatically integrated as the author or subject of a News item) to enhance site structure
  • contextual filters, where a specific content type has a start state with prefigured widgets

About FAQ, News, People, and Publications

You are not limited to displaying this feature-specific content only within its own section. Using the Custom page type, you can leverage the feature widget options to pull data from these additional features into your chosen page layouts. This allows you to showcase specific people, highlight publications, embed relevant FAQs, and more, all alongside your narrative text and other content. See Figure 1, below, for an example of a Custom page with News and FAQ content along with other widget content, and Figure 2, below, for a list of available News listings widgets for displaying News content.

About Portfolio, Analytics, SEO

A Portfolio page is a grid of your site's content, organized by categories and filtered by categories. Portfolio pages can feature one content type or a mix, and the content can be displayed using one of 3 display types (Card, Text Card, Expanding Grid). After you have put together both the foundational architecture and the specific feature content on your site, Portfolio pages are a good choice for organizing and showcasing your content in a presentable "portfolio" grid. See Figure 3 for an example of a Portfolio page using the "Card" display on a Berkeley Web Builder starter site:

The Analytics and SEO features are available for live sites only. The Analytics feature allows you to add a Google Analytics 4 measurement ID to your Berkeley Web Builder site, and the SEO feature provides simple search engine optimization enhancements. (More information about the Analytics and SEO features coming soon.)
