Content types

The Berkeley Web Builder platform comes with two built-in, generic content types (Basic and Custom pages), as well as specific content types (News, FAQ, Person, Department, Portfolio, Publication) that are used with the platform's additional features, which are optional and available upon request via your Site Manager. The below information provides an overview of the available content types and how they should be used on the platform when creating and featuring content.

Content type descriptions and details

See the various linked pages, below, for more information about and instructions on how to add and use each content type.

Generic content types

  • Basic pages are a good fit for simple pages with a fixed, one-column layout. Text, images, videos, and attachments (files) can be added to Basic pages via the WYSIWYG. When added to the main menu, Basic Pages will display a local (sidebar) menu on either the left or the right side of the page.
  • Custom pages are a good fit for more complex pages with multiple sections, rows, and/or columns of content using layouts. Many widget types can be added to Custom pages in order to create and feature site content. Hero page title options (image and color band) can only be added to Custom pages.

Specific (feature) content types

  • FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) content items are frequently asked questions and their answers. FAQ items are typically organized by category and displayed on Custom pages using FAQ widgets.
  • News articles are time-sensitive content with a publication date and other optional fields and are typically used for press releases, announcements, or external articles. News articles can be featured using News listings widgets.
  • Person content items contain biographical, contact, and other information about people related to the site. They can be integrated with other features and can be featured using People listings widgets.
    • Department content items are primarily used along with the People feature and are organizational units (e.g. an academic unit or a research center) and can also be used to represent a grouping (e.g., a degree program or initiative).
  • Portfolio content pages provide dynamic, filterable displays of your site content organized by category. Portfolio pages can be customized with additional widgets.
  • Publication content items are documents such as journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, white papers, etc. Publications can be integrated with other features and can be featured using Publications listings widgets.
